Sara Rosie

For Sara Rosie, art has always been a passion–and something she’s always done completely on her own.  ”My mom’s friend would babysit my brother and I when we were really young.  She says I would just sit there and draw for hours on end.”  While growing up, she preferred to establish her own style rather than taking classes.  She says that she took one class at Olbrich Gardens when she was 10 and a painting class in high school, and that was it.  During high school, she chose to use choir to fill her art credit requirements.  Animals incorporated most if not all of her subject matter growing up.  ”I would draw basic animal scenes when I was younger, and then in 6th grade a friend and myself started inventing all of these anthropomorphic characters with backstories and everything.  I continued on that route throughout high school, always trying to make my characters look more realistic.  Then when I was a junior, I completed my first surreal painting, and then everything changed for me.”

She chooses to work with acrylic paints, Prismacolor markers and pens, and also pursues traditional film photography.
“With my photography, I explore the apparent and hidden beauty in this world.  Much of it we pass by day to day without notice.  I try to do that in my paintings and drawings also, but some are based off my personal and emotional life–as if I am pouring myself and all I’m feeling onto the paper.  Regardless of subject matter, when I am working on a piece I get so sucked in that I feel as if I’m pulling something real from another dimension.  I always listen to music when I work, all of that artistic energy keeps me going and keeps me connected.”
She claims that as far as inspiration, a single scenic moment will set off a chain reaction to the creation of a piece.

”I’m never afraid to try something new.  There is no way I would want all of my pieces to look the same!
